CASE STUDY GUIDELINES
The Case Study is ....
a detailed analysis of one English language learner and
the development of a course of study to help them with their weaknesses.
This assignment has been spread in stages over the course so that
it is not left to a rushed last minute cram.
YOU MUST FOLLOW THE TIMETABLE BELOW and meet the deadlines indicated.
WEEK 4- Introduction
to Case Study input session.
WEEK 5- Select
your learner for the assignment.
Ensure that they are willing to give you writing samples, be interviewed and
take the required short tests.
WEEK 6- Give details of your selected learner to the
tutor.
You should receive a past Case Study example in return.
WEEK 7- Analysing our students'
needs and learner backgrounds input session.
This will prepare you for a full needs analysis of your learner.
Bring details of your learners to the sessions.
WEEK 8- Write up candidate profile and background.
WEEK 9- Start needs analysis of your learner.
WEEK 10- Get two informal and two formal /essay writing
samples from the learner and record an interview with them.
WEEK 11 - Testing 1 input session. This
will prepare you to evaluate existing tests to find an appropriate tool for
the assessment.
This assessment of your learner should be tied to your needs analysis and support
you in developing a programme for the learner.
WEEK 12 - Testing 2 input session.
This will prepare you to design a short test for your learner.
This assessment of your learner should be tied to your needs analysis and support
you in developing a programme for the learner.
WEEK 12 - Check with your mentor on how far you
have got with the Case Study.
WEEK 13 - Choose and administer test(s) to your learner.
WEEK 14 - Testing 3 input
session to help you analyse the test results appropriately, and decide if
you need to design further short tests. The session will focus mainly on the
reading and listening test elements, leaving the written and spoken analyses
largely to the sessions in week 19.
WEEKS 15-16 - Analyse test results and do any further
testing required.
Check with your mentor while you are doing this.
WEEK 19- Written Error Analysis input session to look
at ways of analysing writing samples.
Bring your learner's writing samples.
WEEK 19- Oral Error
Analysis input session to help you transcribe chosen sections of the interview
and analyse them.
WEEKS 20-21 - Input sessions on course planning.
WEEKS 20-21 - Review and analyse written samples.
WEEKS 22-23 - Transcribe and analyse interviews.
Check with your mentor while you are doing the above analyses.
WEEK 25 - Final Case Study input session on tying it
all together cohesively and coherently with the plan meeting the learner's needs.
WEEKS 26-27 - Finish first full draft and check with
your mentor to see if you are missing anything.
WEEK 28 - Final deadline for submission of completed
Case Study.
